The Outer Banks is still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Dorian. It will be a long time until parts of the area are fully repaired, particularly Ocracoke and Hatteras islands. Not only has the entire community come to support victims of the hurricane, but other organizations have stepped up to answer the cry for help as well.

For the past few years, the Goodwill Community Foundation has partnered with North Carolina Baptists on Mission (NCBM) to assist those dealing with the devasting aftermath of the hurricanes that hit the coast. This year was no different.

The Goodwill Community Foundation has donated $20,000 to the Outer Banks community to help with disaster relief and recovery. NMBM teams set up stations in Hatteras, Ocracoke and Hyde County to provide showers, hot meals and restoration groups to help those who have lost their homes.

Dennis McLain, president and CEO of the Goodwill Community Foundation, shared the working relationship his company has with NCBM. “The history of Goodwill connects back to the history of the Methodist Church,” he said. The Goodwill Community Foundation united with the Methodist community on relief and recovery around the nation. McLain found that working with NCBM served to be a “better use of funds” due to their close relationship.

Richard Brunson, director of NCBM, said that their organization has “definitely benefited from the Goodwill foundation.” The Goodwill Community Foundation has helped NCBM with trucks, food and housing for the effected victims. “We are the ones that have been blessed,” Brunson said.

McClain said that donating money has been much more beneficial than donating material things. “A long time ago, we donated clothing, which goes to waste. Donating stuff hurt the economy. Donating money enables people to use resources as they need it and see fit.”

With the funds donated from the Goodwill Community Foundation, Brunson’s team worked to remove debris, provide laundry services, house victims and serve up to 3,000 meals a day. The efforts of both foundations have helped provide a better life for those who lost their homes and hope.
