Maryland man dies in ocean off Nags Head

A 51-one-year-old man from Davidsonville, Md. died in the ocean off Nags Head today, Thursday, October 3, according to a press release from the Town of Nags Head.

Nags Head Police and Fire and Ocean Rescue departments responded to a 911 call at approximately 3 p.m. after receiving a report of a man floating face down in the ocean near the 8300 block of South Old Oregon Inlet Road.

Members of Nags Head Ocean Rescue brought the man to the beach where CPR was administered. Efforts were unsuccessful and the man was later pronounced dead.

According to Nags Head Police Chief Phil Webster, the Maryland man was swimming with a group of people and a few members of the group noticed him face down in the water. Webster said CPR and all other necessary protocol were performed on the man once first responders got him out of the water.

The incident is under investigation and the exact cause of death is unknown at this time. Red “no swimming” flags were not posted on Nags Head’s beach today, continued the statement from the town. Webster confirmed there were not red flags on the beach.

“The Town of Nags Head’s thoughts are with the man’s family after this tragic event,” said the town’s release. “Thank you to Dare County EMS for their assistance with this call.”
