The Town of Kill Devil Hills hosted their annual Ice Cream Social Wednesday night, Sept. 18 at Aviation Park. The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department, Police Department and town staff were there to feed and talk with their community. All dogs were welcomed to the event to play in the town’s brand new Paws Park.

Hot dogs, hamburgers and all the toppings and sides were cooked and served by the KDH Fire Department. They have all been coming to the social for years. Benjamin Battaile of the KDH Fire Department staff said the event “is an opportunity to talk to the public and show our faces. Normally when we meet the public, we are there talking about rip currents and smoke detectors. This is more of an informal hangout session.”

The KDH Police Department served desserts and set up tables to speak one-on-one with the community. Lora Gilreath of KDHPD said the police department tries to do a lot of community outreach programs. “We have a little bit of bike safety stuff and everything else is bubbles, arts and crafts to have interaction and meet some folks,” she said. She believes safety talks and fun can go hand-in-hand.

Recently, Kill Devil Hills opened a dog park to provide a space for the community dogs to run, play and meet their fellow furry friends. It was designed by the Buildings and Grounds Division and built over the summer, according to town clerk Mary Quidley. She brings her dog Andy to Paws Park to play while she can watch and relax.

Rachel Tackett, office assistant, and Cameron Ray, assistant director of planning, introduced the “town mascot,” Penny. “She is basically the planning dog and one of the original founders for the ground,” Ray said. Penny, Andy and all the other dogs that came to the social were able to run and play alongside their owners throughout the night. The dogs even got to enjoy “Furry Flurries,” made of whipped cream topped with a dog treat.

Music was provided by the First Flight Middle and High School jazz bands. Bob Ebert, director of the FFHS Jazz Band, led the students as friends and family watched their performance. Mayor Sheila Davies of KDH cheered on the band as students performed individual solos.

The Ice Cream Social was an overall success. “The town enjoys doing this,” said a KDH staffer. “We have a lot of people that have been coming to this for years and will be for years to come.” It is a free event for the public to come and enjoy time with their friends in the community.
