The competitors on day three, Sept. 17, of the 2019 ESA Easterns Surfing Championship were put to the test as they battled the harsh ocean conditions on their boards. The waves were around 4-8 feet throughout the day. Nonetheless, the surfers took to the water and rose to the challenges.

The Open Shortboard finals ended in a win by Kainalu Nichols from New Hampshire in the Men’s final and the Adult Ironman Award. Virginia’s Blayr Barton took home the Open crown after outscoring Carl “Little Buttons” Burger last second.

The Easterns were put on hold Wednesday, Sept. 18 as safety became a concern due to the high winds Nags Head was experiencing. According to the ESA website, the championship will pick up again Thursday at 8 a.m.

ESA hosted a pizza and movie night Wednesday at Jennette’s Pier beginning at 6:30 p.m. Featuring the film “Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable,” there is also a raffle to benefit those affected by Hurricane Dorian in Hatteras.
