All schools in Dare County will be closed Monday, Sept. 9 for all students and school staff. “Central office staff will report on an optional basis, while essential maintenance, facility and transportation staff will report.”

Dare Schools Superintendent John Farrelly announced late Saturday that Cape Hatteras Secondary School suffered significant damage or loss due to Hurricane Dorian. About one-third of the school is damaged.

He said “many of our other schools have sustained more minor damage (Ex. lost roof shingles) that need repair but they will not prevent us from opening back up, once power is restored.”

Hyde County Schools will be closed Monday. Both of their campuses – Mattamuskeet and Ocracoke – suffered damage, with Ocracoke’s being more severe.

Tyrrell County Schools will also be closed Monday. There continued to be power outages in the county and at Columbia High School Sunday.

Currituck County Schools will operate on a normal schedule Monday. An announcement Sunday from CCS states: “We recognize some of our families may still be dealing with power outages and other immediate needs. If a student is unable to attend school tomorrow as a result of the storm’s impact, parents should send in a note upon the student’s return to excuse the absence.”

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Dare County Board of Education will hold a special and a regular meeting at the Dare County Schools Central Office in Nags Head.

The special meeting starts at 4 p.m. and will consider confidential personnel matters. The special meeting will be held in open and closed session.

The regular meeting starts at 5 p.m.

Dare County Families,

Good afternoon. I hope that this email finds you and your family safe and well. My thoughts have been with the many members of our communities who have suffered significant damage or loss due to Hurricane Dorian. Particularly in Cape Hatteras and our friends in nearby surrounding counties.

As you are likely aware, Cape Hatteras Secondary School suffered significant damage as a large part of the roof flew off during the storm. As we canvased the building today, about 1/3 of the school has been damaged. We are working on a comprehensive recovery effort to be in a position to open CHSS as soon as possible. Many of our other schools have sustained more minor damage (Ex. lost roof shingles) that need repair but they will not prevent us from opening back up, once power is restored.

Many parts of our communities are still without power, which prevents our facilities team from ensuring that our schools are functional and operational. Therefore, Dare County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 9 for all students and school staff. Central office staff will report on an optional basis, while essential maintenance, facility and transportation staff will report.
