John Peter Rascoe III, left, Southern Shores town manager, was presented with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Mayor Tom Bennett and finance officer Bonnie Swain during an August 15 retirement luncheon at the Black Pelican Oceanfront Restaurant in Kitty Hawk.

Among the most prestigious civilian honors awarded by the Governor of North Carolina, it is generally presented to persons for exemplary service to the state and their communities above and beyond the normal call of duty and that has made a significant impact and strengthened North Carolina.

Other notable recipients include Billy Graham, Andy Griffith, Jim “Catfish” Hunter, Michael Jordan, I. Beverly Lake Jr. and Dean Smith.
