Charles Elmer Meekins

Charles Elmer Meekins, 86, only son of Carson and Evelyn Hooper Meekins, died Sunday morning, July 7, 2019, at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro.

Following high school, Charles enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country for five years. After the Navy, Charles completed two years at East Carolina University in Greenville, but having been bitten by the “commercial fishing bug” he returned to Stumpy Point to be fully dedicated to this “disease” for the remainder of his working life.

In 1957, Charles married the love of his life, Clara Faye O’Neal, and together they adopted and raised two beautiful baby girls, Paula Faye in 1967, and Shanna Joy in 1970.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and infant great-granddaughter, River Faye Ross. He is survived by daughters Paula Faye Meekins and husband Danny L. Rogers Jr., and Shanna Meekins Harrell and husband Richard E. Harrell; grandsons Nicholas Ross, Mark Ross, Luke Ross and Leo Ross; granddaughter Chandler O. Harrell; two great-grandsons; a host of cousins as well as many brothers and sisters in Christ.

A celebration of Charles’ life will be held at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, at 3:30 p.m. on July 14. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of Charles’ choice, Dare Challenge, PO Box 123, Wanchese, NC 27981.
