The Columbia Board of Aldermen on June 3 authorized McDavid Associates of Farmville, the town’s housing planners, to file an application for a $750,000 grant to improve low and moderate income owner-occupied dwellings on Scotsville and Broad streets.

The application may also include community facilities near the intersection of Scuppernong Drive and Road and Railroad streets.

The program will not involuntarily displace or temporarily relocate any individuals, explained Mike Barnette, the McDavid Associates professional engineer who has worked with Columbia officials for more than two decades on a long series of housing projects.

No local matching money is required to be eligible for the grant, known as the 2019 Community Development Block Grant Neighborhood Revitalization program.

No comments were made during the public hearing before the aldermen.

In a separate action, the board approved the compliance provisions of a CDBG infrastructure grant already approved. The money will be used to replace sewer lines on Road and Scotsville streets and in Secota Village.
