At the end of May, Dare County planning director Donna Creef sent notice to the owner of Waterfall Park in Rodanthe stating that the facility was a nuisance and considered dangerous, noxious, detrimental and prejudicial to the public health and general welfare.

Steve Merjos is now in discussion with Creef as to a schedule to address the issues outlined in the notice. The fence surrounding part of the property has been repaired and recent graffiti covered up.

According to the letter, multiple buildings and other structures are “severely dilapidated and in a state of disrepair.” The structures are posted as “unsafe” by Dare County. “These structures should be demolished or inspected by a licensed structural engineer,” writes Creef.

Of particular concern is the bungee tower, which is “in danger of total collapse.”

The landing pool at the waterslide is not adequately covered. “Remnants of the waterslide are in danger of collapse,” writes Creef.

Piles of old tires, construction debris and concrete are targeted for removal.

Viewing platforms along racetracks are in danger of collapse and are still accessible.

Also, abandoned bumper boats and go carts litter the site.

A soundside basin has stagnant water and must be filled with sand or dirt or drained as it is a breeding area for mosquitos.

Creef reports that Merjos is in contact with her.
