Ashley Gilreath, a fourth-grade teacher at Manteo Elementary School, has been recognized as the 2024-25 Outstanding Elementary Mathematics Teacher for Dare County Schools. She was recently honored by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) at the organization’s annual conference.

“Ashley is passionate about making learning fun and engaging,” said Dawn Tillett, Dare County Schools MTSS and math coordinator. “She incorporates Whole Brain Teaching strategies in her classroom to promote active student participation. Whether singing multiplication songs, clapping out multiples, or using call-and-response activities to master fractions, Ashley’s dynamic approach to instruction addresses various learning styles and keeps her students excited about learning.”

During the NCCTM conference, Gilreath was introduced to the concept of vertical classrooms, an innovative instructional strategy that encourages students to move around, collaborate and engage deeply with math tasks. Upon returning to Manteo Elementary, she implemented the approach with remarkable success and has since shared it with her colleagues, leading to its adoption throughout the school.
