On Monday, Jan. 20, Dare Democrats and others joined the North Carolina Coastal Federation for a Morning of Service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Volunteers gathered to pick up trash along the federation’s adopted roadside, Highway 345, in Wanchese.

Event organizers Sara Hallas Hemilright, education and outreach director for the NC Coastal Federation, and Laura Allendorf, Dare County Democratic vice chair, expressed their gratitude to the 25 individuals who turned out to help with the event. Together, they collected more than 25 bags of trash, another eight bins of recycling, plus some large items, for an estimated 500 pounds of debris removed from the local environment.

“The success of this event truly reflects the strength of our community’s spirit and commitment to preserving our beautiful surroundings,” said Hemilright. “We are grateful for the volunteers who came out and made a difference on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, despite the frigid temperatures.”
