The Dare County Department of Health & Human Services (DCDHHS) will be offering foster parent training classes beginning February 19, 2025. The training includes nine classes held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. Two of the classes will be in-person and seven held virtually via Zoom.
“Children in our community urgently need loving foster homes as they come into foster care through no fault of their own,” said DCDHHS foster home licensing social worker Brittany Canter. “Dare County is seeking compassionate individuals who can provide long-term, short-term, or respite care for these children. Your support could truly make a world of difference in the life of a child.”
Completion of these classes is one of the requirements to becoming a foster parent; other requirements will be discussed and completed during the classes.
“Foster care is intended to be temporary and placements can last anywhere from a night or two to a year or more. On some occasions, children may be unable to return home and another permanent plan such as adoption is possible,” stated a DCDHHS news release. “Children in foster care can range from birth to 21 years old, and foster parents are able to specify a desired age range for placements in their home.”
