A rare weather event for the Outer Banks area occurred Tuesday night into Wednesday morning: snow! Any amount of snow is a rarity in this region, let alone in the amounts accumulated over the course of the weather event.
A special weather statement was issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday morning, January 22, 2025. It is expected that dangerous road conditions will continue at least into Thursday morning. Temperatures will fail to rise above freezing Wednesday, preventing any meaningful improvement to road conditions. “Any modest melting that does occur will rapidly freeze overnight as temperatures fall as low as the upper 0s, especially west of Highway 17,” stated the advisory.
“Travel is discouraged. If you must travel, slow down and allow for plenty of space between yourself and other vehicles. Be especially mindful on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads,” the advisory continued.
CHNS ramps closed
As a safety precaution, Cape Hatteras National Seashore announced Wednesday morning it has temporarily closed all ORV ramps due to difficult beach driving conditions. The combination of snow and sand has resulted in numerous vehicles getting stuck on Hatteras and Ocracoke island beaches. The extraction of vehicles has been challenging.
No ferry service
The North Carolina Ferry Service posted the following announcement at 6:49 a.m. Jan. 22, 2025: “Good morning! Winter weather is causing service suspensions on all NC Ferry routes this morning. We’re hoping for improving conditions during the day today, and each route will resume service as soon as it is safe to do so.”
