Snow has started falling on the Outer Banks

The winter storm has made its appearance along the Outer Banks. The National Weather Service says the storm will last until Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. The warning was issued for Tyrrell County, mainland Dare, mainland Hyde, Pamlico County, southern Craven, west and east Carteret, northern Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island, and Hatteras Island.

For areas on the west side of Pamlico Sound and the northern Outer Banks, the National Weather Service is calling for six to eight inches of snow. On Hatteras Island, six to eight inches of snow in Rodanthe and four to six inches in Frisco are predicted. On Ocracoke, the forecast calls for six to eight inches of snow.

The weather service reports snow will start accumulating after sunset, which is around 5:15 p.m.

Brief blizzard conditions are possible. Blowing and drifting snow is expected; blustery, with a north wind 20 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 34 miles per hour, is predicted.

A cold weather advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. on Wednesday. A prolonged period of dangerously cold conditions is expected through mid-week. Temperatures will be in the 30s and nighttime ones will be in the teens. When factoring in the wind, it will feel like single digits above zero.
