Hyde County Schools has announced that Grace Ward, an exceptional third-grade teacher at Ocracoke School, has been named a finalist for the prestigious NCCAT 2025 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Beginning Teacher of the Year (BTOY) Award.

“Grace’s dedication to her students, her school, and the Ocracoke community exemplifies the excellence in education that Hyde County Schools strives to provide,” noted a Hyde County Schools news release.

Ward is now in her third year of teaching and “continues to demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to her profession. She is deeply engaged in the life of Ocracoke School, serving as a member of the leadership team, the chair of the School Improvement Team, and a contributor to multiple committees, including MTSS, Safety, Calendar, STEAM, Kindness, and Homecoming,” the release continued. “Grace’s involvement extends far beyond her classroom; she is an active and involved resident of the Ocracoke community, participating in activities and events that enrich the lives of her students and neighbors.”

When not in the classroom, Ward dedicates her time to leading her Dance Co. students or cherishing moments with family. She is currently pursuing further education at East Carolina University.

Superintendent Dr. Melanie Shaver shared, “Grace Ward’s contributions to Ocracoke School and the greater Ocracoke community are immeasurable. Her passion for teaching and her devotion to her students make her an invaluable asset to Hyde County Schools. The entire Ocracoke Island community is a better place because of her tireless work, positive energy, and boundless enthusiasm. We are incredibly proud of her and grateful for the impact she has made on our schools and families.”

Ward will join her fellow finalists at the Truist Leadership Center in Greensboro in March for an interview and learning opportunity. “Being named a finalist for this distinguished award is a significant honor, and it reflects her extraordinary dedication and excellence as an educator,” stated the release.

“Hyde County Schools congratulates Grace Ward on this outstanding achievement and is cheering her on as she continues her journey to represent Ocracoke School and our district at the state level,” the release continued.
