Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department sent firefighters from its south station with a tanker, an engine, a utility truck and a squad vehicle.

Also called to the scene were station personnel and equipment from Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills. Colington Fire Department was asked to send its Rehab Unit 15, which is “a fire ground support unit to assist in the health and safety of firefighters during emergencies,” reports Colington Fire on its Facebook Page.

Additionally, Tyrrell County Fire Department was called out. The North Carolina Forestry Service’s tanker was call to the scene. East Lake on Dare County’s mainland does not have a municipal water system.

The fire was knocked down and firefighters cleared the scene at 9:50 a.m. But the fire rekindled and a call went out at 12:03 p.m. for firefighters from Manns Harbor and Roanoke Island to respond. The rekindle was dispatched and firefighters cleared the scene at 1:30 p.m. The fire did not spread into the wooded area beyond the house and grounds.

A Dare County Sheriff’s Office deputy was first on the scene. A State Highway Patrol officer assisted.

Dare County Emergency Medical Services transported one person to the Outer Banks Hospital.

U.S. 64 was initially closed down in both directions. About an hour later, one lane was opened for traffic.
