Damage from fire inside Bodie Island Double Keepers’ Quarters being assessed

After observing smoke inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Bodie Island Double Keepers’ Quarters, staff from Eastern National, the operator of the building’s retail store, called 911 at around noon on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

All occupants safely exited the building, states a media release from the National Park Service.

Upon arriving at the Bodie Island Light Station, the Nags Head Fire Department reported seeing smoke coming from the building’s four chimneys. The fire was extinguished with no reported injuries.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore staffers are evaluating the damage and are working with Nags Head fire department to investigate in the incident.

The Bodie Island Double Keepers’ Quarters is closed indefinitely due to the investigation and any needed repairs to the structure.

Responding to the fire call were Nags Head Fire Department, Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department, Kill Devil Hills Fire Department, Colington Fire Department and Dare County Emergency Medical Services.

“Cape Hatteras National Seashore is grateful for the timely response to this afternoon’s fire by multiple local fire departments,” stated David Hallac, superintendent of National Parks of Eastern North Carolina, on Tuesday. “Their efforts minimized damages to this historic structure.”
