Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mike Caton

Exodus 32:29, “Then Moses said, ‘You have been set apart to the LORD today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.’”

Why were the Levites set apart and blessed? Was it because they slaughtered those Israelites who were worshiping the false god? Was it because they did what no one else wanted to do? Moses asked in verse 26 who was on the Lord’s side, and the Levites rallied to that. They were faithful, they were committed, they were willing to follow God in whatever he called them to do.

Now, let’s be careful with this thought. Our salvation does not come because we have earned it or we deserve it. You can never do anything that will get you to heaven. You can never be good enough. And honestly, you have already been too bad to go to heaven. All it takes is one sin, and we are all guilty of far more than that. But those Levites followed God, they were on the Lord’s side. It was about their faith and their commitment. In Romans 4:3, Paul says Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. And he goes on to make the point it was not the things Abraham did that made him righteous in God’s sight. It was the faith, the trust, the belief, the commitment that he had. You see, Abraham and these Levites as well, were committed to God before they did anything else.

The question for us this morning is, are we on the Lord’s side? And if we are, then we too are set apart and blessed by God. Simply put, we need to consider the commitment we are making to the Lord. Once we are committed, the actions will follow. It is our faith that is pleasing the Lord.

Father, help my commitment to you grow. In Jesus’ name, amen.
