This time of year, Wilson’s snipes (Gallinago delicata) are starting to arrive at Pea Island and Alligator River national wildlife refuges.
Years ago, it used to be a standing joke to send someone out on a snipe-hunting trip – something thought to be almost impossible because the birds are so hard to find, noted USFWS.
At Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, they will be along the edges of the canals or the edges of the flooded fields, often hiding in the longer grass. With their camouflage coloring, it makes them almost invisible.
But it sure is fun to find them – almost like a treasure hunt!
