Bicyclist dies following collision with fire truck

On Dec. 7, 2024, at approximately 4:45 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated a collision involving a bicyclist and a Town of Nags Head fire truck on US 158 at the intersection of E. Epstein. The bicyclist was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life threatening injuries.

On Dec. 16, 2024, a statement was issued by Master Trooper M.L. Stephens with Troop A, State Highway Patrol:

Trever Tilley, 31, of Nags Head, was driving a Nags Head KME 2008 pumper truck, and attempting to turn left onto US 158 from E. Epstein Dr.

Gary Ferguson, 74, of Nags Head, was on a bicycle traveling illegally in the pedestrian crosswalk on US 158 when he was struck by the fire truck as it was turning onto US 158.

Ferguson was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Dec. 12, 2024. Investigators determined both parties contributed to the collision. After consultation with the district attorney, Tilley was issued a citation for unsafe movement.

Ferguson was a member of the Nags Head Planning Board.
