A special meeting of the Dare County Board of Commissioners is now scheduled for Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 11 a.m. The meeting will be held in the Commissioners Meeting Room at 954 Marshall C. Collins Dr. in Manteo.
The purpose of the meeting is two-fold: to discuss the waterline break located under the sound between Roanoke Island and Nags Head and to approve funding to repair said break and to authorize the board Chairman Robert L. Woodard to send a letter to the Congressional Delegation concerning the Buxton Formerly Used Defense Site, also known as the former U.S. Navy Base in Buxton.
Brian Harris, a board member of the Buxton Civic Association, has spoken to the Dare County Board of Commissioners frequently about the situation with the old Navy base in Buxton.
On Dec. 2, 2024, Harris gave an update on the civic association’s presentation at the North Carolina Beach, Inlet and Waterways Association.
At this December meeting, he delved into the law that “prohibits jetties, groins, hardened structures – whatever you want to call them.” He told the commissioners that the law has already been amended once and that he believes that it can be amended further.
“As a current unincorporated town, we look towards the commissioners to be our voice. We implore you to take up this fight. We cannot afford to wait. Our very livelihood depends on it.”
