On Thanksgiving night, a Maryland man was killed in a single vehicle crash on Caratoke Highway in Currituck County.
Just prior to the wreck, the Currituck 911 center received reports on a pickup truck traveling toward the Outer Banks at a high rate of speed and operated in a reckless manner.
A Currituck County Sheriff’s Office deputy driving in the opposite direction clocked the truck at 79 miles per hour. The wreck occurred while the deputy was turning around to give chase.
At 7:52 p.m., Nathaniel Stuart Schrump, 29, from Potomac, Maryland, left the roadway in his pickup truck and went airborne. The truck busted through a utility pole, reports Sgt. D.C. Pridgen with the North Carolina Highway Patrol. The wreck occurred in the 6300 block of Caratoke Highway.
Schrump was killed in the incident. He was the only one in the vehicle.
Sgt. Pridgen reports that alcohol, the high rate of speed and not wearing a seat belt contributed to the fatality.
Members of the Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department directed traffic along back roads in northern Grandy. Also responding to the wreck were Currituck County Fire and Emergency Medical Services as well as Currituck Sheriff’s deputies and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
