Dare Arts is now seeking entries for the 47th Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show, which will open at the Dare Arts Gallery in downtown Manteo at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2025.
Artists wishing to participate in the show can find the prospectus and sign up for a specific time to drop off their work online at DareArts.org/frankstickshow.
Writer, editor, artist and publisher Linda Lauby will judge the 47th Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show. Lauby graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she majored in English literature and journalism. She owns Outer Banks Press, a publishing company known for bespoke publications and public art projects such as The Winged Horse Extravaganza, an installation of more than 100 fiberglass horses commemorating the Centennial of Flight. Lauby has written and designed several books, and her art exhibits include International ArtExpo at NYC’s Jacob Javits Center, plus a solo show inaugurating the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce.
“I am both grateful and honored to accept the challenge to judge the 2025 Frank Stick Memorial Art Show, especially in the celebratory year of Dare Arts’ fiftieth anniversary, as my self-definition as an artist shares that timespan,” said Lauby. “I began creating art as a painter and illustrator, and along the way added music, acting, writing, printmaking, photography and digital graphic design. I write to make sense of life, and I create art and experiment with photographs to share my own vision with others. For me, art and life are inseparable. It’s evident in everything that I do, whether it be cooking, playing music, designing books, arranging flowers or organizing my cupboards.”
Artists are encouraged to enter their most innovative work for the possibility of winning the distinctive Eure Best In Show Award.
Sponsored by the Don & Catharine Bryan Cultural Series, the opening reception will be held on Friday, February 7 from 6 to 8 p.m., and is free and open to the public.
After the opening, the show will be on display for viewing during normal gallery hours from February 8 through March 1.
The Frank Stick Memorial Art Show is the longest running visual arts exhibit in Dare County, and is held in memory of Frank Stick. His influence on the Outer Banks as a preservationist and artist cemented his lasting legacy as one of the most important figures of the 20th century in the county.
“There is no better way to launch our 50th celebration year than by paying homage to an Outer Banks artistic legend,” said Dare Arts exhibitions director Tiffany Lindsey. “The Frank Stick Show is nearly as old as Dare Arts itself. This year the reception will feature original artwork by Frank Stick, as well as a recent portrait of Stick, painted by local artist David Beal.”
Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring the show or awards should contact Dare Arts executive director Jessica Sands at DareArtsInfo@gmail.com.
