Barred owl: What’s in a name?

Ornithological references agree that the barred owl (Strix varia) gets its name for the horizontal color bars of feathers on the chest and the vertical bars of colored feathers on the abdomen.
Barred owls are larger than barn owls, but smaller than great horned owls. They’re about the size of a mallard or crow, noted USFWS.
They are native to eastern North America and they are the most frequently seen owl on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.
