The Manteo Board of Commissioners has embarked on strategic planning with the Coastal Dynamics Design Lab in North Carolina State University‘s College of Design and its Department of Landscape Design and Environmental Planning and the School of Architecture.

The semester-long course has the goal of increasing social and physical resilience through the planning process and exploring “strategies to reduce flood risk, improve public safety and enhance long-term environmental function within the town’s historically flood-prone areas.”

Two studio teaching faculty members, Andy Fox and David Hill, are team leaders along with Roberta MK Fox, a project sub-consultant with Catalyst Design, PLLC.

The lab’s proposal states “the overarching goal of the 2025 Coastal Dynamics Studio is to enable students, faculty, practitioners, and community citizens to engage in learning from a real situation through a creative problem-solving model …”

Students will be challenged to produce “innovative designs for sites and buildings that integrate coastal resilience strategies, natural and nature-based solutions, and passive and active sustainable best practices.”

The Town of Manteo has worked with North Carolina State’s College of Design to produce plans in 1982 and 2004.

The project timeline runs from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30, 2025.
