Kill Devil Hills commissioners set a date for a public hearing to consider a zoning amendment for beachfront properties. The amendment will define “large single-family dwellings” and will add some additional requirements to these homes including an access aisle and floor area ratios. The hearing will be at Town Hall Monday, December 9 at 6 p.m.
Commissioners also approved a minor zoning amendment relating to accessory dwelling unit (ADU) requirements. Previously, ADUs were not permitted to extend beyond the front of a primary residence. The amendment deletes that requirement and replaces it with a height standard: ADUs now cannot “exceed the height of the primary residence.”
This change was made to provide additional opportunities for housing, said Mayor Pro Tem Ivy Ingram when she made a motion to approve the amendment. It passed unanimously.
During public comment, resident Sue Kelly shared an opportunity for the public. She serves as an alternate delegate on the Senior Tar Heel Legislative, a group that takes up important issues for seniors.
The primary Dare County delegate is stepping down, and Kelly said that by the end of February, both positions will be open to any Dare County resident aged 60 and up. There are three statewide meetings a year in Raleigh and four regional meetings in Hertford. The county pays the expenses of the delegates to attend the meetings.
“It’s a fun thing and it’s important work,” Kelly said. “Not nearly enough people know that it exists but it is a good organization that is determined to let more people know what it’s up to.” Kelly urged anyone interested in one of these positions to let her know.
