The sora (Porzana carolina) is one of the most prevalent species in the rail family, populating every state across America.

Because of its secretive nature, it is a bird that hardly anyone ever gets to see.

They live in marshes, flooded fields and wetlands. Most often, they can be heard rather than seen. Their call is known as a “whinny,” which sounds like a downward laughing flute-like call. Those who get a chance to hear it will always remember it, noted USFWS.
