On December 30, 1917, the Caffey’s Inlet Coast Guard Station crew assisted a stranded tugboat, Pampa, during a snowstorm.

By using the breeches buoy, three men were brought off the vessel to send telegrams. The CICGS crew then ran lines for the tug and continued to stand by on the beach during the night in case further assistance was needed.

All in a Day’s Work

Sometimes it’s about being a problem solver: On December 28, 1894, the Whales Head LifeSaving Station crew (formerly known as Jones Hill) discovered a small vessel stranded on an island in the Currituck Sound about two miles from the station.

After arriving on scene, they discovered the Lurline had no one on board. They were able to get her afloat and took her to a place of safety.

Nearly a month later, on January 16^th, they were finally able to deliver the vessel to her owner in good condition.
