The 28th Annual Mayflower Marathon Food Drive – a ’round-the-clock food drive taking place simultaneously at five different locations throughout the region in Virginia and North Carolina – is being hosted Classic Rock 106.9 The Fox (WAFX) and FM99 (WNOR).

Food Bank of the Albemarle will be collecting food and donations at the Moyock Welcome Center in Moyock on Friday, November 22 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, November 23 from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Commemorative T-shirts with the 28th Annual Mayflower artwork will be available while supplies last for a donation of $25 or more each shirt. All food and funds collected at the Moyock location support the hunger-relief efforts of Food Bank of the Albemarle. For every $5 collected, the Food Bank can provide more than 15 meals.

All food and monetary donations collected in Virginia Beach and Suffolk go to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. All donations made at the Hampton and Tabb locations benefit the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. The recipient of the donations made in Moyock will be the Food Bank of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City.

Rick Rumble and the entire FM99 team along with Mike Arlo and the Fox staff will be broadcasting live from the event. For complete details about the food drive, go to FM99.com or 1069theFox.com.

“The Mayflower Marathon continues to reflect the incredible generosity of our entire community. Our generous listeners, staff, and sponsors look forward to coming together every November,” said Carol Commander, general manager of WNOR and WAFX. “We truly appreciate the commitment of our community – coming together to support the area Foodbanks and end hunger here in Hampton Roads.”

“Food Bank of the Albemarle is excited to participate for our 2nd year in the Mayflower Marathon Food Drive,” said Liz Reasoner, executive director of the Food Bank of the Albemarle. “Our hunger relief network supports 155 programs including food pantries and mobile markets, feeding over 43,000 of our neighbors across 15 counties in Northeastern NC. Donations made to the Food Bank of the Albemarle during the Mayflower Food Drive will help us provide the most nutritious meals to our neighbors year-round.”

“This year, Mayflower Marathon serves as a powerful reminder that, even as we gather for our own family celebrations, many of our neighbors continue to face hunger,” said Christopher Tan, president and CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. “With one in ten of our neighbors food insecure, we are especially grateful for our Foodbank partners, like FM99 and 106.9 The Fox, who help ensure the warmth of a holiday meal reaches every table. Their commitment embodies the true spirit of the season.”

“As food and other basic needs like rent, prescriptions and utilities continue to be more expensive for individuals, families, and seniors, our neighbors are having to make difficult choices about which essential expenses to pay. Unfortunately, food is often something that is sacrificed. We’ve seen increases in attendance at our food pantries and program sites rise as much as 37% when compared to last year, and food donations are not keeping up with these increased requests for assistance. The Foodbank is currently having to purchase more food than ever before; food that is distributed through our network of partner agencies and mobile distributions to our neighbors struggling with food insecurity. We rely on the compassion of our friends and community partners throughout the greater Peninsula to donate generously during the annual Mayflower Marathon Holiday Food Drive to help us restock our shelves. Together, we can make the holidays FULL for all,” said Bob Latvis, chief executive officer of Virginia Peninsula Foodbank.
