Douglas Evans Campbell was born February 11, 1943, in Richmond, VA to Susan Evans and Page Campbell and died August 7, 2024. He is survived by his brother Page Campbell Jr. of Richmond, VA; son Chris Neal of Mill Valley, CA; and daughter Rebecca Bell of Bend, Oregon. Doug was an avid fisherman, duck hunter, and sailor with passion for baseball, and NASCAR. He also played a mean game of poker.
Doug grew up in Richmond, VA, left high school at the age of 17, and joined the Marine Corps. While in the Marine Corps he obtained his GED, became a radio operator, and earned the Expert Marksman Medal. For the majority of his enlistment, he was stationed in Hawaii, where he met his first wife, Carol Cowperthwait (now Carol Neal). After his honorable discharge, Doug moved to Connecticut where he and Carol started their family. Following the end of that marriage, Doug moved back to Richmond and attended Virginia Commonwealth University, graduating with a degree in education.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Doug taught at Elk Hill Farm in Goochland, VA, a residential private school for at-risk boys. He met his second wife, Amy Campbell (now Amy Stone), while vacationing on the Outer Banks in 1982. The couple moved together to the Outer Banks in 1983 and Doug built their house in Collington, where he lived until his death. During his marriage to Amy, Doug managed Coastal Animal Hospital, his wife’s veterinary practice. Doug was active in his community and served on the Colington Harbour Association’s Board of Directors. He was instrumental in developing both the Colington Harbour Christmas Boat Parade and the July Fourth Boat Parade. Doug started his own pool maintenance company in 2005; it is still in operation.
Doug will receive a military burial, and a private reception will take place in November. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to one of Doug’s favorite charities, Heifer International at www.heifer.org/. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
