Powells Point, NC – Fred Darling Scarborough, a cherished native of Duck, North Carolina, peacefully passed away on November 12, 2024, at his home in Powells Point, North Carolina, at the age of 93. Born on October 11, 1931, Fred led a life marked by dedication, craftsmanship, and love for his family and community.
Fred honorably served his country in the Korean War as a proud member of the United States Marine Corps, embodying the values of courage and service throughout his life. After his military service, he embarked on a long and fulfilling career as a plumber before eventually retiring.
He inherited his skills and passion for craftsmanship from his father, Levin. Fred was a talented craftsman, known for his skill in carving ducks and building birdhouses. His artistic expression extended into music, where he found joy and camaraderie in playing the guitar. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for fishing and leading young minds as a Boy Scout leader in Kitty Hawk.
Fred was the oldest living member of the Scarborough family from Duck, NC, a lineage that he honored through his actions and spirit. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Ethel Mae Kight Scarborough and Levin Dunton Scarborough, as well as his sister Elsie Scarborough, and brothers Robert, Levin, and Lenwood Scarborough.
Fred is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Elizabeth Olah Scarborough; daughter, Deborah Ann Scarborough; sons, Brian Lee Scarborough (Janice) and William “Clay” Scarborough (Sue). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Clayton Scarborough (Stephanie), Lee Finn (Deidre), Courtney Nixon, Jenna Scarborough, Patrick Finn, Davis Scarborough, Levin Scarborough (Casey), Steven Finn (Stephanie); great-grandchildren, Brooke, Ethan, William, Lilly, Jordan, Cierra, Ariana, Fletcher, Jax, Ronan, and Lochlan; and four great-great-grandchildren. Fred also leaves behind his dear sister, Betty Chasson of Grandy, and brother, Gerry Scarborough (Theresa) of Powells Point, along with countless friends and extended family who will miss him dearly.
A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held in Fred’s memory at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk. Fred’s legacy of love, skill, and service to others will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
