VETERANS! Please consider the following schedule and if you are able join in the celebrations of YOU!

For those who would like to attend the services honoring our veterans on Veterans Day, please note:

OBX Sporting Events – Ramada Inn – Saturday, Nov. 9, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Look for the Dare County Veterans Advisory Council booth inside where you can see other vendors as well and acquire your free Dare County Veteran Discount Card. Very important: If you wish to obtain your free Dare County Veteran Discount Card, please look for Patty O’Sullivan, Dare County veteran service officer. Be sure to bring your DD-214 showing honorable discharge and your driver’s license (does not specifically need to be a N.C. license). Also, you must either reside in Dare County or own property (improved or vacant land) and show either a Dare County property tax bill, a residential lease agreement with your name on it or a local utility bill. The process to get your card takes about 10 minutes and well worth your time. It will entitle you to over one hundred business discounts from Hatteras to Corolla and save you 10%-20%! For the list of businesses that offer veteran discounts, look on darenc.gov/Veterans – you will be surprised!

  • Veterans Writing Workshop (free to veterans/family members) – Saturday, Nov. 9 and Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024 – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at U.N.C. Coastal Studies Institute, 124 Coastal campus Way, Wanchese (Skyco – off N.C. 345 across from Dare Storage). This 12thannual event will inspire attendees about singing/songwriting, basic chords, lyrics, home production/recording and audience preparation. The instructors will also offer a free concert on Saturday evening for workshop attendees and their family and friends. Pre-registration is required and space is limited! Please review about the celebrated instructors and register on the darearts.org website or contact their office at 252-473-5558. Be inspired and inspire others at this outstanding workshop opportunity!

Outer Banks Veterans Concert – Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024 – 7 p.m. Pioneer Theater downtown Manteo. Tickets are $5 with a military or veteran ID and $10 for general admission. Purchase your tickets online at ThePioneerTheater.com or at the theater door. Hear stories through music by talented and accomplished musicians.

  • Veterans Day Poppy Drive – Saturday, Nov. 9 and Sunday, Nov. 10 – 8:30 a.m.- 3 p.m.; then on Veteran’s Day, Monday, Nov. 11 from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Walmart Store in Kitty Hawk.
  • Veteran’s Day Ceremonies –Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, as follows:

9:30 a.m. – Downtown Manteo at the Dare County Veterans Memorial

11 a.m. – Nags Head Town Hall, 5401 S. Croatan Hwy.

11 a.m. – Southern Shores Town Hall, 5375 N. Virginia Dare Trail

11 a.m. – Columbia – Van Horne Auditorium

12:30 p.m. – Kill Devil Hills – Veterans Memorial at the intersection of Kill Devil Hills Town Hall and Veterans Drive

  • Scout Pack/Troop #116 – Veteran’s Day, Monday, Nov. 11 at 5:30pm at Camp Emmanuel, 245 Williams Drive, Kill Devil Hills, annual flag retirement service. Please be there by 5:30 p.m. and you are welcome to bring your own flag to be retired as well.
  • Veterans Celebration Luncheon – Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024 – 12 noon – Virginia S. Tillett Community Center, 950 Marshall C. Collins Dr.; lunch will be served at no charge; please call 252-475-9270 in advance to reserve your seat! (closest building to the highway in the Dare County Courthouse complex)
  • Soundside Market – Nags Head, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024 – noon to 4 p.m. Look for our Dare County Veterans Advisory Council booth to see Patty O’Sullivan and obtain your free Dare County Veteran Discount Card. Please note the requirement as noted above in the description for OBX Sporting Events in order to obtain your card.
  • Also, there are beautiful displays on site at the Dare County Library (Manteo), the Roanoke Island Festival Park (Manteo) and the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center (Kill Devil Hills) that exhibit items left at The Wall That Heals event November 2023 while the mobile Wall came into Dare County and where items from Vietnam veterans’ loved ones were left at the exhibit as well as photos taken by Vietnam veterans in service during the Vietnam War in an exhibit called A Thousand Words.

To see these incredible photography works of art and the heartfelt treasures left by family members/friends in honor of their Vietnam veterans, please take time to see them.
