Leonard Gilmore Logan Jr., former longtime resident of the Outer Banks, passed from this earthly realm on Sunday, November 3, 2024 at age 87. He was born on May 16, 1937 in Flint, Michigan but spent over 50 years as a North Carolina resident beginning with his undergraduate and law school days at Duke University.

While working at the Pentagon in 1963, Leonard had a front row seat to observe the civil rights movement, including a large Martin Luther King Jr. march. While stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, he met and married the charming southern belle from Wilmington, NC, Sylvia Fountain. They were an instant family with Sylvia’s young children, Kathy and Ricky. A double whammy surprise made them a family of six when their fraternal twins, Gil III and Tish were born in 1966. After a three year stint in Japan as a Lieutenant Commander Navy JAG, Leonard and Sylvia moved stateside and had Eric in 1969. In 1972, they moved to Manteo from Raleigh when Leonard started a private law practice.

In addition to his law practice, Leonard owned the award-winning Elizabeth’s Cafe and Winery – a destination, fine dining establishment in Duck for over 26 years. Especially thrilling for Leonard was the inclusion of Elizabeth’s in a Travel Channel story about the Outer Banks. His motto of “May all your pains be Champagnes,” expresses his joi de vivre and the happiness that entertaining brought him.

Leonard is survived by his five children: Gil Logan (Tracey) – Sacramento, CA; Tish Powell (Mike) – Ellaville, GA and Eric Logan (Chris) – Charlotte, NC and stepchildren Kathy Skomski (Stephen) – Lexington, KY; and Richard Brake (Joann) – Kitty Hawk. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Nathan Brake, Hunter Brake, Daniel Brake, Jack Logan, Josh Logan, Taylor Logan, Garrett Logan and Macy McCauley. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Sylvia Logan.
