Current Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie and Chief Deputy Jeff Deringer will retire at the end of the sheriff’s current term, Dec. 7, 2026.

The two county law enforcement officers were initially scheduled to retire Dec. 1, 2024, but Sheriff Doughtie changed his mind, said the sheriff in a telephone conversation. He will serve out the remaining two years of his term of office.

Deringer will be staying with him, reported the chief deputy.
