Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mike Caton

Exodus 29:29-30, “Aaron’s sacred garments will belong to his descendants so that they can be anointed and ordained in them. The son who succeeds him as priest and comes to the tent of meeting to minister in the Holy Place is to wear them seven days.”

Aaron’s sacred garments are not really Aaron’s at all. They belong to the priesthood, to his descendants who will hold the office. Once Aaron is replaced by his son, that man will wear the sacred clothes and he will take the entire seven days to be set apart as well. That is the time we will see is required for this ordination to the priesthood. And then when he has lived his life, one of his sons will take those garments, be ordained in them, and serve out this lifetime.

As we think about that, we realize that these priests are limited, they are only men after all. Sure, they might live a long time and serve many years. They might do great things for the Lord and for the people in offering the sacrifices, interceding for the people, teaching them the truth of God, and setting an example for them to follow in their daily lives. There is no doubt these men have special roles, they are set apart from the people. But they are only people in the end.

We need to remember, no matter what we are doing for the Lord, that we are simply people as well. Sure, some folks have a more prestigious or visible job, some jobs are really not all that glamorous. But in the end, we are simply God’s servants. And Jesus would later say, “So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty,’” Luke 17:10. We are simply God’s servants, and unworthy servants at that.

Father, thank you for allowing a crooked stick to be a productive part of your kingdom.
