March 7, 1942 – October 23, 2024
Manteo, NC – Nina Faye Green, 82, of Manteo, NC, was called home to the Lord on October 23, 2024, with her daughters by her side. Nina had been bravely battling aggressive pancreatic cancer since July and experienced a complication.
She was born on March 7, 1942, to the late John Carlyle Green and Edna Bailey Green Stahl.
Her two beloved brothers preceded her in death, Lewis “Carlyle” Green and Larry Green, as well as her stepfather, Roy E. Stahl. Nina is survived by her two daughters, Cindy Gower Maciejewski, husband Joe Maciejewski of Morrisville, NC, and her grandsons, Joshua (Josh) Graham Maciejewski (Lauren Hyde) and Jacob Anthony Maciejewski; daughter Misty Rae Gower Parnell and husband, Robert Parnell of Nags Head, NC. She also leaves behind her life companion of 37 years, Milton Reed Phelps, and his daughter, Kimberly Phelps, and grandchildren Carson and Hayley Hahne. Other members of her beloved family include her sister-in-law (m. to Carlisle Green) and their son, Byron Green, his wife, Gaynore, and children, Jared, Andrew, Kendall, and Madison.
Nina was a 1960 graduate of Broughton High School of Raleigh, NC. Upon graduation, she started her career with the State of North Carolina government as a secretary. She worked with many high-level government directors and agencies. She moved to Wanchese, NC in the Outer Banks in 1981 to assist the Director of the newly established Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park. She retired in 1993 as the Director of the Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park with 33 years of state government service. She was awarded the highest award granted for state service, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, in 1993 by NC Governor James B. Hunt Jr. Upon retirement, she worked many fun part-time jobs with the North Carolina Aquarium gift shop in Manteo, the Pfaltzgraff outlet, and the Eddie Bauer outlet store (where she proceeded to buy more dishes and apparel than she sold). She also served her community, serving Meals on Wheels for many years.
Nina and Milton enjoyed their annual, monthly trips to Sanibel Island, FL. They cared for many stray cats that showed up at their door, and they adored their beloved dog, Bailey. In the last year of her life, she adopted BoBo from the OBX SPCA Dare County Animal Shelter, and he was the greatest comfort to her through her cancer treatments, never leaving her side.
She was an amazing mother, a kind individual, always putting others happiness and needs above her own. She loved her friends. She was a proud grandmother. She will be missed deeply.
The family will receive friends and relatives Monday, October 28, 2024, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo. A private graveside funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at Montlawn Memorial Gardens in Raleigh.
Donations in her memory to the OBX SPCA Dare County Animal Shelter are welcome.
Twiford Funeral Homes, Outer Banks is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.TwifordFH.com.
