Raymond “Ray” Glenn Pate (age 70), of Kitty Hawk, NC, passed away at his brother’s home in Sanford, NC this month. His departure was preceded by a brief and brave battle with cancer, during which he was surrounded by his loved ones. Raymond was an expert structural engineer, enthusiastic community member, and loving father.
Born and raised in Lumberton, NC, Raymond, graduated from Lumberton Senior High and earned degrees from Louisburg College, UNC Wilmington, and NC State University.
Raymond spent the bulk of his career owning and operating his Outer Banks-based firm, Pate Engineering & Land Surveying, where he specialized in coastal residential structures, working with dozens of loyal clients and friends.
As a parent, Raymond was a supportive mentor to Katie (28) and Bailey (30). He valued opportunities to travel, explore, and learn alongside his children, whom he remained very close with until his passing.
He will be remembered for his thirst for knowledge, many hobbies, grand sense of humor, and larger than life personality.
Raymond is survived by his children, Katherine “Katie” Pate and Bailey Townsend Pate; brother Dr. Marion “Marty” Butler Pate III; sister-in-law Linda Phelps Pate; children’s mother Gail Bailey Pate; aunt Dean R. Pate; niece Dr. Tess Pate Jordan; and nephew Lt. Col. Matthew Pate.
