Great egret on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge

Great egrets (Ardea alba), such as this one on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, are large birds that can grow to more than 4 feet tall with a wingspan of about 4.5 feet.

Like other egrets and herons, they can often be seen standing motionless in shallow water waiting to stab swiftly downward with their sharp yellow bill to capture a fish, frog, shrimp or a variety of aquatic insects and reptiles and amphibians.
