Currituck County 4-H’ers were honored at the 77th Annual 4-H Electric Congress held earlier this summer at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. 4-H Electric Congress is sponsored by Duke Carolinas Energy, Dominion NC Power, Duke Progress Energy, and the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service. Each year the event recognizes youth who have spent the past year learning about electricity, alternative energy sources and practices, and new and emerging electric and energy technologies. Youth also participate in special outings that allow the youth to learn about their state and to engage with other 4-Her’s from across the state.

• Elijah Campbell, son of Mike and Heather Campbell, won the state Gold Medal for his Electric Portfolio (three years cumulative work).
• Amanda Jennings, daughter of Keith and Beth Jennings, won the Silver Territorial (Dominion NC Power) Award.

The 4-H Electric Program is an informal hands-on youth program conducted by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, professional 4-H agents, and adult volunteer leaders. They develop and deliver activities that provide youth with opportunities to learn about the fundamentals of electricity, renewable energy technologies, and energy conservation. Participants also develop an awareness for how energy is generated, distributed, used, and financed. A key focus of the 4-H Electric Program is the development of life skills such as critical thinking, record keeping, problem solving, public speaking and teamwork.

Congratulations to all of these outstanding Currituck County 4-H’ers and thanks to all the parents, volunteers, and staff, who helped these young people succeed and achieve.
