Beaufort County Community College (BCCC) celebrated the inaugural GED Day on September 16. This national day celebrates and promotes the General Educational Development (GED) program, offering a valuable opportunity for individuals to take the first step toward earning their high school equivalency diploma.

GED Day raises awareness about the importance of obtaining a GED, providing information and resources to prospective students, and encouraging community members to pursue their educational and career goals.

Students move through the program at their own speed, testing in different subjects when they are ready. The college offers digital literacy to help students with basic computer skills, email, social media and a bilingual English/Spanish preparatory class for students who want to take the GED in Spanish.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the first-ever GED Day,” said Penelope Radcliffe, Beaufort CCC’s director of College & Career Readiness. “The GED program is a lifeline for so many in our community, offering a second chance for individuals to complete their education, improve their job prospects, and build a better future for themselves and their families. This day is all about creating access and supporting people in that journey.”

“I decided to come back to get my GED because I wanted to further my education, set a good example for my children, and do things I always wanted to do before I dropped out of school,” said GED student Hester Farris-Clark.

The GED is a widely recognized high school equivalency credential that opens doors to college, vocational training and employment opportunities. For those who did not complete high school, earning a GED can be a critical step toward achieving their personal and professional goals.

Beaufort CCC offers options for students after they complete their diplomas, including short-term credentials and associate degree programs, which are free for qualifying students. For the past few years, the BCCC Foundation has provided $500 scholarships for select students in each graduating class who are continuing their education to help with textbooks.
