The Lindsay C. Warren Bridge, which spans the Alligator River and connects the Dare County mainland and Tyrrell County, was temporarily closed Monday afternoon after a dump truck caused damage.

“A dump truck ran through the gates on the Alligator River Bridge and into the barrier,” said NCDOT Division One communications officer Tim Hass just before 3 p.m. on Monday. “We have managed to get the bridge locked in the closed position, but there is still debris on the roadway that we will need a boom truck to remove. We hope to reopen the bridge to highway traffic within an hour or two.” Hass reported just before 4 p.m. that the bridge had reopened for vehicular traffic.

Hass also noted that “electronics on the bridge were knocked out of place during the wreck, and will need to be fixed before we can reopen the swing span to let boat traffic through. Therefore, the Coast Guard has been notified that the bridge is closed to boat traffic until further notice.”
