“It’s yucky stuff,” says Creef, as a bucket of the “nasty silt” is scooped out of a bigger bucket. The scooped up stuff is swung around and unloaded into a dump truck, which hauls it to the sediment pond on the southside of the harbor. The material will be dried out, dug out and hauled off.

In the distance to the right side of the third photo, another barge can be seen ready to scoop out stuff from the center of the Rodanthe channel.

The dredging is a Dare County project to make sure the Rodanthe Harbor and the emergency ferry route to Stump Point can be used during Hurricane season. The contract cost is $84,000.
