Zebra swallowtail on the refuge

The zebra swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus) can live up to six months. They feed exclusively on the common pawpaw tree, from which they may derive some chemical toxicity that aids in repelling birds and other predators. Visitors to Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge should keep an eye out for these delicate and beautiful flyers.
