Kitty Hawk Recreation Committee members attended a special August 27 meeting to discuss details for a proposed walking trail on town property.
Still in a preliminary stage of development, the trail meanders an estimated two miles around Kitty Hawk Town Hall and is designed to highlight the natural beauty of the area.
“I think it’s important for council to be aware of what we are trying to do here,” said Kip Tabb, committee vice chair.
According to committee chair Paul Henriques, the initial concept is to create a natural-setting trail similar to one at Kitty Hawk Park on West Kitty Hawk Road. The four foot wide route would have timber borders and includes one large loop connected to two smaller ones.
There are areas of low land that drain into Hobb’s Creek that would likely require an investment in bridges to cross them. Committee member Pete Mantz suggested building bridges later as the trail develops and that results of a public survey be included with the information to be presented to Kitty Hawk Town Council.
During the evening discussion it was also pointed out that a number of people currently use the Town Hall parking lot at 101 Veterans Memorial Drive and walk their dogs almost all the time.
The Recreation Committee recommendation will now go to Town Council for a review and direction on project development within town budget guidelines.
