Currituck commissioners considered hangar elevations for the Elizabeth City State University Project at Maple Commerce Park.
The project includes the construction of classrooms, a hangar, maintenance area, and a storage hangar at the Currituck Regional Airport at 230 Airport Road in Maple. The land is owned by ECSU and all buildings will be owned by ECSU.
Commissioners are responsible for approving the elevations of the hangars.
The project is comprised of 14,000 square feet of hangars – which can fit 10 or more aircraft – and 4,300 square feet of classroom space.
Construction will begin this fall, with the expectation for completion in time for the fall 2025 semester.
The county hopes to bid out their own plans for additional hangars and a taxiway project at the same time so construction can happen simultaneously.
“We’re trying to also look at how we can put everything together so it makes sense long term,” said airport director William Nelson at the August 5 commissioners meeting. “We’re trying to make sure that we’re planning for future hangars and future terminal building – trying to really look past today and into the future especially with hopes of Mid-Currituck Bridge happening and our traffic significantly increasing more than it already has.”
Nelson said that the county airport is receiving increasing amounts of traffic. “We had 30 jets in 7 days,” he said. Though some were the same aircraft landing several times, he said it was a busy week.
“My parking lot was full every morning with rental car returns,” he added. “We don’t usually see a beginning of August like this.”
