Manteo commissioners authorized the town’s manager to sign a contract of sale on the vacant PNC Bank building at 301 N. Hwy. 64/264.

The commissioners authorized town manager Melissa Dickerson to approve any non-substantive changes to the contract for sale and conclude the transaction.

The sale price is $900,000. The commissioners approved a budget amendment transferring that amount from Fund Balance to the Capital Outlay Land/Real Estate account.

A 7,758 square-foot building sits on an acre of land. The brick building was built in 1969. Its current assessed tax value is $1,418,100.

The unanimously-approved motion passed without comment.

The town’s staff and police department have outgrown the current facility on Budleigh Street. The pending purchase doubles the space available for town business. The Budleigh property has 7,228 square feet.

In other business, the town’s board of commissioners:

– Adopted the balloon release ordinance. The fine for releasing a balloon is $250. Manteo is the final jurisdiction to adopt the ordinance. All of Dare County now has a balloon release ordinance in place.

– An adjustment was made to the pay plan. With the departure of Michele Bunce, the commissioners split the responsibilities associated with her position. Jamie Whitley, town clerk, will assume the responsibilities of public information officer and continue as town clerk. The hiring rate for the combined job is $76,819.81 with a maximum range of $140,108.60.

Mayor Sherry Wickstrom asked the town manager to arrange a follow-up meeting with a representative of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The meeting will discuss items voiced at a December 2023 meeting.

The next Town of Manteo Board of Commissioners meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024 in the Town Hall on Budleigh Street.
