Condition of horses in Elizabeth City investigated, donations accepted for care and rehabilitation

The Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release that it had been notified in reference to the welfare of horses located in the 2900 block of Main St. Ext. in Elizabeth City.

“An investigation began and the horses were evaluated today [July 25] by US Equine Rescue League, Inc. according to Henneke Body Conditioning Scoring System,” stated the release. “The Henneke Body Conditioning Scoring System rates equine on a range of 1-9, with 1 being Poor and 9 being Extremely Fat. A healthy scoring ranges from 4-6. Twenty-three (23) horses were evaluated, with the average scoring for the horses being rated at 1.9.”

As a result of the evaluation, two horses have been rehomed, four horses that are boarded at the facility were to be returned to the owners July 26 and the remaining 17 horses will be either surrendered or seized to the care of the US Equine Rescue League, Inc.

“No charges have been filed at this time due to our first priority being the welfare of these horses. Care and rehabilitation for seventeen (17) horses will be expensive. If you would like to assist with offsetting costs for the care and rehabilitation for these horses, donations will be accepted at the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office.
