A teenager from Maryland died along the beach in Corolla on Saturday, July 27, 2024.
A missing swimmer call came to Corolla Fire and Rescue at 12:49 p.m. Currituck Fire and Rescue asked for the U.S. Coast Guard from Base Elizabeth City to search the area. The base responded with a MH60 Jayhawk helicopter.
The helicopter started an aerial search pattern starting at Persimmon Street, the address of the missing swimmer. Without success, the U.S. Coast Guard left the scene around 4 p.m.
Meanwhile on the beach, 16 staffers from Corolla Beach Rescue started line dives, where the rescue team members form a line and dive repeatedly feeling the bottom for the victim’s body, explained Corolla Fire and Rescue Chief Richard Shortway. The line shifted south and then returned to the north point to start over. For three and half hours the ocean rescue team conducted line dives.
As the tide changed to low, one of the line divers located the body of the 13-year boy from Maryland. The victim’s name has not been released.
