Seen rarely on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, the red-necked phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) is a robin-size shorebird that is comfortable on the ocean.

Its diet consists mostly of various plankton and aquatic and flying insects.

And it has an interesting feeding routine, while floating on the water’s surface the phalarope will spin, causing zooplankton and other invertebrates to rise to the surface for easier feeding accessibility.
