On the morning of July 4, the Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a structure and grass fire on Beulah O’Neal Drive in Rodanthe.
Responding was an engine with three more big trucks including a ladder truck ready to roll.
Instead of a structure fire, firefighters found a riding lawn mower and a small patch of grass on fire, which was quickly extinguished.
Ten volunteer firefighters responded, including surfing firefighters who came over the dune to help.
